"These artifices can still go much further and achieve the synthesis of the arts, of music, painting, and literature ... One should not be astonished if, with only the means they have now at their disposal, they set themselves to preparing this new art (vaster than the plain art of words) ... to compose the visible and unfolded book of the future.... " Apollinaire, 1917

JIM ANDREWS Hello Carleton! Looking forward to our video-conference!

Jim Andrews is a hybrid writer known for his interactive online hypermedia that synthesizes arts, media, and programming. He has published his site vispo.com since 1996 as the center of his output as a visual poet, programmer, critic, and audio guy.

He quit his comfy job as a Tech Writer in Seattle in 2000 to pursue being a web.artist full time. He has concentrated, since then, primarily on his "vismu" (visual music) works and on creating tools for their creation. In 2001 he was awarded a senior Canada Council grant to do Arteroids, a shoot-em-up literary game. In 2002 he was Artist in Residence in Toronto at the Centre for Creative Communications and also launched Windows for Shockwave, a commercial product he sells from his web site for Macromedia Director developers. In 2003 he was contracted by the University of Victoria (British Columbia) to program interactive audio applications for live audio/video performance and for collaboration/jamming over high-speed networks.

His most recent work includes "Interactive Audio for the Web," an article surveying the extant work and the elements of such work, Paris Connection, a project in critical media that examines the work of six Parisian web.artists, and Enigma n2, an experimental interactive audio work.

He lives in Victoria BC, Canada where he received a degree in English and Mathematics in 1983.
